SUBJECT:

CLOSURE OF POST-TMI COMMITMENTFOR THE WASHINGTON PUBLIC POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM (WPPSS) NUCLEAR PROJECT NO. 2 (WNP-2)

TO REPORT BWR SAFETY RELIEF VALVEIN-SERVICE PERFORMANCE DATATO GE NUCLEAR ENERGY (TAC NO. M98096)

Dear Mr. Parrish:

By letter dated January 14, 1997, WPPSS requested the closure of the post-Three Mile Island (TMI)commitment to submit quarterly safety relief valve (SRV) in-service performance reports to GE Nuclear Energy for WNP-2.

The staff has reviewed your submittal and as discussed in the enclosed safety evaluation has found it acceptable for WPPSS to discontinue the reporting of performance data for the SRVs to GE Nuclear Energy.

Instead, WPPSS should maintain records of the in-service SRV performance at the WNP-2 site for future NRC inspections and audits. This is in accordance with the NRC's approval of a similar request made by the BWR Owners'roup dated June 25, 1996.

Ifyou have any questions concerning this action, please contact me at (301) 415-1341.

Sincerely, Original Signed By Chester Poslusny, Senior Project Manager Project Directorate IV-2 Division of Reactor Projects III/IV Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Docket No. 50-397
