Dear Mr. Parrish:

On December 19, 1995, you submitted a request for approval of an alternative to the provisions of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)

Boiler and Pressure Vessel

Code,Section XI, "Rules for Inservice Inspection of Nuclear Power Plant Components,"

in accordance with 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3) for WNP-2.

Your request was to use the provisions of ASME Code Case N-524 as an alternative for the examination of longitudinal welds in Class 1 and 2 piping.

We have completed our review of your request.

Our safety evaluation is provided in the enclosure.

Use of Code Case N-524 is hereby authorized pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3)(i),

provided that, for ferritic welds, the volumetric examinations of the adjacent circumferential welds at the intersections with the longitudinal welds.include scanning for reflectors transverse to the circumferential welds.

The use of ASME Code Case N-524 is authorized until such time as this Code Case is published in a future revision of Regulatory Guide (RG) 1. 147.

At that time, if you intend to continue to implement this Code Case, you must follow all provisions in Code Case N-524, with any limitations that are issued in the revised RG 1. 147.
