REQUEST FOR APPROVAL TO REVISE TORNADO DESIGN CRITERIA (TAC NO. H88626)

Dear Hr. Parrish:

In support of the staff's review of the January 6,

1994, Washington Public Power Supply System (WPPSS) request for approval to revise tornado design criteria (G02-94-001), it has been determined that the additional information described below is needed.

NUREG/CR-,4461 indicates that designing a plant in the western United States for a maximum, tornado wind speed of about 200 mph appears reasonable.

WPPSS asked for approval of a maximum wind speed of 192 mph.

You are requested to provide the basis for a maximum wind speed of 192 mph (vs.

200 mph), including a discussion of any plant structures,

systems, or components that are currently designed or are planned to be designed to a maximum tornado wind speed below 200 mph.

Should you determine that a maximum wind speed of 200 mph is appropriate for the WNP-2 site, you should submit a revised proposal.

The requirements affect nine or fewer respondents and, therefore, are not subject to the Office of Management and Budget review.

If you have any questions, please contact me at 301-415-1352.

Sincerely, ORIGINAL SIGNED BY K. M.
