Dear Mr. Sorensen:

SUBJECT:

ATWS RULE 10 CFR 50.62 RELATING TO RECIRCULATION PUMP TRIPS (RPT)

SYSTEMS (TAC No. 59158)

By our letter dated December 6, 1988, we provided our safety evaluation (SE) of your submittals regarding implementation of the Anticipated Transient Without Scram (ATWS) Rule, 10 CFR 50.62.

Our SE stated that your proposal regarding reactor recirculation pump trips (RPT) under ATWS conditions was not in compliance with the ATWS rule.

By your letter dated June 22, 1990, you responded to the concerns identified in the SE and notified us that system modifications for the ATWS-RPT had been completed during the 1990 spring refueling outage.

You also proposed an RPT pump trip logic testing scheme and indicated that technical specification changes were not required.

After several discussions with members of our staff, you agreed to modify the technical specifications to state that two operable channels per trip system were required for each ATWS-RPT trip function.

By your letter dated August 20, 1990, you committed to submit the technical specification change request to the staff for review by September 28, 1990.

We believe that this technical specification change will resolve the concerns identified in the SE.

We will review your technical specification change request upon receipt.

This completes our actions for TAC No. 59158.
