REQUEST FOR ADDITIONALINFORMATION RELATEDTHE RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER 97-04 FOR THE R. E. GINNA NUCLEAR POWER PLANT DOCKET NO. 50-244

1. What is the maximum sump temperature assumed in the NPSH analyses' 2.

In response to question 5, it is stated that "although containment overpressure is not credited, a review of containment pressure and temperature versus time curves indicates that containment'verpressure would exist at the beginning of Sump 'B'ecirculation.

Since Ginna Station was licensed prior to the publication of Regulatory Guide 1.1, and has never committed to use that guide, containment overpressure could be credited to add margin to the NPSH calculations.

RG8 E at this time has not chosen to do so."

It is the staff's position that whether or not a licensee is committed to RG 1.1, NRC staff review and approval should be obtained before a licensee can credit containment overpressure in their NPSH calculations.

Additionally, it appears to the staff that the containment pressure and temperature curves discussed in the Generic Letter response are the peak containment pressure curves and not the minimum containment pressure curves.

Only minimum containment pressur'e curves should be used to determine ifcontainment overpressure exists.

Which pressure curves were used in the GL response7 Enclosure
