NRC INTEGRATED INSPECTION REPORT 50-244/97-06
Dear Dr. Mecredy:
This letter transmits the results of safety inspections conducted
by NRC inspectors at the
Ginna Nuclear Power Plant from June 30, 1997 through August 3, 1997. At the
conclusion of the inspection, the findings were discussed
with Mr. J. Widay and others of
your staff. The inspection report also includes a summary of the predecisional
enforcement conference
held in the NRC Region
I Office on August 5, 1997, to discuss the
vehicle barrier system issues identified in Inspection Report 50-244/97-08.
During the five week period covered by this inspection period, we noted safe plant
operation.
Several good activities in the operations
and maintenance
areas were noted,
including your efforts toward resolving the auxiliary feedwater pump recirculation valve
unreliability, diagnosing anomalous service water pump performance,
and replacing the
spent fuel pool weir gate bladder.
During our review of your radiological environmental monitoring program, we noted a
discrepancy between the meteorological tower base instrumentation
and the control room
instrumentation data.
We are concerned that the data discrepancy could impact
emergency response
activities.
We request that you review this matter and provide us the
results of your review in writing, including any corrective actions, within 60 days from the
receipt this letter.
In accordance
with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's "Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter
and its enclosures
will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).
