Dear Dr. Mecredy:
NRC INTEGRATED INSPECTION REPORT 50-244/96-12
This letter transmits the report of safety inspections conducted
by NRC inspectors at the
Ginna Nuclear Power Plant from November 16, 1996 through January 4, 1997. At the
conclusion of the inspection, the findings were discussed
with Mr. J. Widay and other
members of your staff. The enclosed report presents the results of that inspection.
During the six week period covered by this inspection period, we noted overall safe
operation of the plant, and good operator response to a faulted service water pump motor.
We also noted several examples of good maintenance
and surveillance practices where
aggressive
actions were taken to identify and correct deficient conditions.. Engineering's
identification of a potential failure of all service water pumps to start was a good finding,
and the subsequent
modification to prevent this failure was successfully accomplished
in a
timely manner.
Engineering also effectively identified and resolved
a potential failure of
containment spray piping inside containment during post accident conditions.
In accordance
with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's "Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter
and its enclosures will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).
