Discussion of Lessons Learnd Short Term Requirements R.

E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-244

Dear Mr. Ziemann:

This letter is i~response to a request from NRC staff concerning our auxi iary feedwater system and responses to items 2.1.7.a and 2.1.7.b of the TMI short term lessons learned.

A reply is said to be ceded by December 14, 1979 although we have not yet received the equest except, in a preliminary telecopied form.

The conformance of the R.E. Ginna system design with criteria 1, 2, 5 and 7 of NUREG 0578 (2.1.7a) for automatic initiation of auxiliary feedwater can e verified by refering to Figure 8.2-4 of the Ginna FSAR and sy tern logic diagrams, listed as follows:

Westinghouse dw 882D612 SH6 SH7 SH8 These drawings were transmi ted to you with our letter

dated, November 22, 1978.

Conformance with power supply criteria 4 and 6 can be verified by reference to Figure 8.2-4 and Table 8.2-4 of the FSAR.

Conformance with testability criterion 3 is demonstrated by performing tests of all the main auxiliary feedwater pumps initiating signals each refueling outage.

The main motor driven pumps are started by developing the automatic initiation logic for both loss of main feedwater and steam generator low-low level.

The main motor driven ppnps are also started during the diesel generator load and safeguard sequence test to test the safety injection automatic initiation signal.

The turbine driven auxiliary feedwater pump steam admission valves are opened (the pump may not start because of lack of steam) by developing automatic initiation

logic for loss of AC voltage and steam generator low-low level.

Additional auxiliary feedwater system tests are conducted in accordance with Technical Specification 4.8.

In accordance with our letter to you dated November 19, 1979, existing auxiliary feedwater flow indication complies with clari-fication C.l to NUREG 0578 (2.1.7b) dated October 30,

1979, as shown in RGGE drawing 33013-544 enclosed.

Sincerely yours, L. D. White, Jr.
