Containment Purge and Vent Valves R.

Dear Mr. Crutchfield:
In a telephone conversation with Dick Snaider of your staff we were asked to provide an update of our activities regarding containment purge and vent valves.
The following interim actions have been taken to provide assurance of valve operability:

Containment purging and venting will be limited as described in our May 29, 1980 letter.

Travel stops have been installed in the containment purge valve actuators.
These travel stops limit the valve opening to approximately 50'.
Analyses have been performed to demonstrate that the valves will close under design flow conditions.
Detailed stress analysis has been performed for the containment purge valves to verify structural integrity following closure from 50'pen.
In order to comply with your requirements for mechanical operability; and seismic and environmental qualification, we have initiated a complete valve qualification program.
It is planned to replace the existing valve operators with new ones qualified to current standards; and perform structural analyses of the valves and operator assemblies.

Selection of new operators and completion of the analyses are being scheduled to allow submittal of a final report to you by December 31, 1981.
Delivery and installation of the operators is scheduled for the Spring 1983 refueling outage.
The purge and vent limitations and travel stops will remain in place until the new operators are installed.
