Fire Protection Safety Evaluation Report Item 3.2.8, Exposed Structural Steel R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-244
Dear Mr. Crutchfield:
Supplement No.
2 to the Fire Protection Safety Evaluation Report, transmitted by your letter dated February 6,
1981 approved our proposal to provide fireproofing of structural steel in the vicinity of the turbine lube oil reservoir and required addition of fireproofing in certain areas of the screen house and turbine building.
The additional protection was to be provided in accordance with the requirements of Appendix R to 10 CFR Part 50.
The purpose of this letter is to describe our plans to provide the required protection as was discussed with the NRC fire protec-tion reviewer for Ginna.
As described in Supplement No. 2, protection for screen house structural steel is to be provided from the effects of a diesel fuel oil fire.
This will be provided either by providing a suitably rated barrier between the diesel fuel oil and the structural steel or by providing protection for structural steel which could be affected by a diesel fuel oil fire.
As described in Supplement No. 2, protection for turbine building structural steel is to be provided from the effects of an oil fire in the vicinity of the hydrogen seal oil unit.
This will be provided by protecting steel which could be affected by a fire involving oil in the hydrogen seal oil.
In each case
- above, the design will consider potential leakage and drainage paths and protection will be provided in these areas as required.
We intend to accomplish both modifica-tions in accordance with the schedule requirements of Appendix R
to 10 CFR Part 50.
