SUBJECT:

FIRE PROTECTION - GINNA The Comission has issued the enclosed Supplement Ho.

2 to the February 14, 1979 Fire Protection Safety Evaluation (FPSE) for the R. E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant.

This Supplement provides the evaluation of four items in addition to the eleven alrea+

provided in Supplement Ho. 1, dated December 17, 1980.

Two of these items, 3.2.4 and 3.1.46, were listed as accepted by the NRC in Enclosure 1 to our letter of April 25, 1980 to Nr. Leon D. Hhite, Jr.

However, the evaluations of these two items were not covered by our previous transmittal and are included in the Safety Evaluation of Enclosure 1 to this letter.

Item 3.1.43, Detector Testing, has been resolved generically as being beyond the present state-of-the-art.

The related evaluation is included in.Enclosui e l.

Item 3.2-.8,. Exposed Structural Steel, is acceptable in part only, as noted in Enclosure 1.

-Because of those areas identified as not being in compliance with 10 CFR 50 Appendix R, this will be considered an open item and will be treated in the same manner as Item 3.2.1, Shutdown Analysis, as discussed in "'of our Hovember 24, 1980 generic letter.

The required completion dates for the modifications associated with the items accepted in this supplement are specified by Paragraph (d) of 10 CFR 50.48 using the date of this supplement as the date of the NRC staff FPSE',l accepting or requiring such features.
