Dear Mr. Maier:

SUBJECT:

R.

ED GINNA STEAtt GENERATOR EVENT EVALUATION AND BASIS FOR RESTART SHanauer HThompson RMattson RYollmer TMurley As a result of a meeting on Februqyy 10, 1982, and subsequent discussions with you, we have. agreed that you will provide to us a complete evaluation

- of the recent steam generator tube rupture event and your basis for restart of the R. E. Ginna Nuclear Plant.

.As agreed, this information shall be submitted for our review and approval prior to restart.

This also confirms our understanding that we will be kept informed of your inspection results and recovery plans as they progress and that our prior approval, based on written submittals from you, is required before significant and irreversible repair programs are undertaken.

As we dis-

cussed, the principal reasons for this requirement are to ensure that important generic data is not lost because of the method of repair, and to be assured that the repair process itself will not jeopardize future operation of the facility.

Your continudd coo eration in this matter is appreciated.

C7 Sincerely,

(
