MODIFICATIONS TO STEAN GENERATOR TUBE NECESSITATED BY TUBE LOCKUP R. E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant TIppo 1 ito By letters dated Hay 24, 1983 and June 9, 1983 and during meetings held with the staff on tlay 12 and 20, 1983, representatives of Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation (RG&E) described a problem encountered in the steam generator tube sleeving process.

The cause of this was determined to be due to the steam generator tubes not being free to move axially and laterally through the support plates.

Members of the RG&E staff discussed the modifi-cations made to the sleeving process as a result of the tube lockup. The documentation of the analyses and tests which have been performed related to the acceptability of the inspections and repairs of the steam generators were also presented to the staff.

We have completed our evaluation of the pretensioning modifications to the sleeving process.

Based upon our evaluation, we find that the pretensioning modification to the previously approved sleeving process is acceptable for the locked up tubes in the Ginna steam generators.

Your commitment to pursue improvements regarding the inspection techniques will improve the capability to assess the condition of the sleeves and the tube integrity in future 8306200235 830616 PDR ADOCK 05000244 P
