LUCIE UNIT 1
Dear Hr. Plunkett:
The purpose of this letter is to authorize your proposed alternative (Code Case N-524) to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (ASME Code).
In a letter dated March 5, 1997, Florida Power.And, Light Company (FPL) proposed an alternative to the requirements of the ASHE Code.
FPL requested approval to implement the alternative rules of ASME Section XI Code Case N-524 pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3).
Code Case N-524 provides an alternative to the ASME Code requirements for surface and volumetric examination of longitudinal piping welds in Class 1 and 2 piping.
Me have reviewed the information provided in the March 5, 1997, letter in support of the relief request.
Based on the information submitted, the alternative requirement in Code Case N-524 for the examination of ASHE Code Class 1
and 2 longitudinal piping welds with the additional scanning
- proposed, is authorized pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3)(ii) because compliance with the Code would result in hardship or unusual difficulty without a compensating increase level in of quality and safety.
The alternative examination is authorized until such time as the Code Case is published in a future revision of Regulatory Guide (RG)
- 1. 147.
At that time, if you intend to continue to implement this Code
- Case, you should also implement any limitations issued in RG 1.147.
