NOTICE OF INTENT TO PREPARE AN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT AND CONDUCT SCOPING PROCESS FOR RIVER BEND STATION, UNIT 1

Dear Mr. Maguire:

By letter dated May 25, 2017, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) received the Entergy Operations, Inc. (Entergy) application for renewal of the operating license for River Bend Station, Unit 1 (River Bend), further supplemented by letter dated August 1, 2017. In support of the application and in accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 51 and Part 54, Entergy also submitted an environmental report for River Bend, also supplemented. This letter provides information related to the NRC staff's environmental review of the application.

The NRC staff has prepared a Notice of Intent advising the public that the NRC intends to gather information necessary to prepare a plant-specific supplement to the NRCs Generic Environmental Impact Statement for License Renewal of Nuclear Plants (NUREG-1437),

related to the review of the application for the renewal of the River Bend operating license.

Enclosed is a copy of the Notice of Intent, which has been forwarded to the Office of the Federal Register for publication.

Pursuant to 10 CFR 51.28, Entergy is invited to participate in the environmental scoping process. As discussed in the enclosed notice, the NRC staff is providing the public with the opportunity to participate in one environmental scoping meeting to be held on September 19, 2017. The meeting will be held at the Town Hall Meeting Room of the St.

Francisville Town Hall, 11936 Ferdinand Street, St. Francisville, Louisiana 70775. The meeting will be held from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., as necessary. There will also be a registration period from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for members of the public to sign in to speak. The NRC will present an overview of the environmental and safety review process and will describe how the process will be implemented for the review of the River Bend license renewal application, followed by an opportunity for members of the public to provide comments.
