Dear Mr. Woody:

As you know, the Anti-Reverse Rotation Devices in the Reactor Coolant Pumps at both St.

USNRC Region II requested that NRR review the safety significance of the degradation.

In order to fully evaluate the safety significance of the degradation, we feel that we need your assistance in conducting our review.

Enclosed is a request for additional information.

Your response is requested within 60 days of your receipt of this letter.

The reporting and/or recordkeeping requirements contained in this letter affect fewer than 10 respondents; therefore, OMB clearance is not needed under P. L.96-511.

ENCLOSURE 1

ST.

LUCIE UNITS 1 AND 2 REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Recently, the Anti-Reverse Rotation Devices (ARRDs) in the reactor coolant pumps of both St. Lucie Units 1 and 2 were found to be degraded.

In order to assess the safety impact of this degradation on the transient and accident analyses in the FSAR, responses to the following questions are requested:

(1)

List all transient and accident events for which credit for the ARRDs is assumed in the safety analyses.

(2)

For each event listed in response to Question 1, provide the results of any analyses of the impacts of ARRD failure (e.g.,

impacts on RCS temperature, RCS pressure, DNBR, etc.) that you have performed.

(3) If credit for the ARRDs is assumed in any safety analyses, describe (a) your maintenance program to prevent the ARRDs from unacceptable degradation and (b) your program to repair/replace damaged ARRDs.
