In your letter of April 2'983 tL-83-257) you advised.the"NRc staff of your decision to remove the first reactor vessel material irradiation surveillance speciman from St. Lucie Plant, Unit Ho.

1 during the cur-rent outage.

Based upon the information contained in your letter and the fact that five irradiation surveillance specitn"n remain for future removal and testing, the staff has no obgection to the removal of the first speci-man at this time.

The staff requests that the information resulting from the examination and evaluation of the speciman be provided for its review as a part of the analysis dealing with your plan to eliminate the thermal shield in future plant operations.
