RHermann By letter dated December 17, 1986 you informed the NRC that the Dresden Station had taken a set of measurements of the drywell skin thickness on both Units 2 and 3 in response to reports of potential *corrosion of the Mark I drywell containment at Oyster Creek.
The initial inspection of the Unit 2 drywell was conducted on December 4, 1986 and Unit 3 was on December 6, 1986.
Both inspections were accomplished by General Electric ultrasonic testing (UT) personnel.
The staff has reviewed the data obtained from the UT measurements and agree that in the areas measured there is not apparent corrosion. However, as you indicated in your letter, measurements where not taken at the level of the sand pocket, and it was at the sand pocket drywell interface at Oyster Creek where the greatest amount of drywell corrosion was found.
We expect Commonwealth Edison Company to follow the guidance for detecting drywell corrosion which will be provided in a forthcoming generic letter. This completes our action on your letter.
