Mr. Cordell Reed Vice President Post Office Box 767 Chicago, IL 60690 Gentlemen:

CAL 85-04 Amendment 1 This refers to the discussion between Messrs. M. Turback and J. Brunner of your staff and Messrs. J. Harrison and D. Danielson of my staff on October 23, 1985, regarding changes made to the monitoring and surveillance actions delineated in CAL 85-04, dated April 5, 1985.

With regard to the matters discussed, the actions delineated in CAL 85-04, are amended as follows:

Item 1: Monitoring System Operability

Commence a plant shutdown within 72 hours8.333333e-4 days <br />0.02 hours <br />1.190476e-4 weeks <br />2.7396e-5 months <br /> if eithe~ 4 or more linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs) are inoperable.

The monitoring system will be restored to an operable condition prior to resuming power operation.

Item 2:

Response to strain gage and LVDT Signals

A verbal report will be made to Region III within 2 working days followed by a written report within 30 calendar days if one or more LVDT signals indicate line movements of +/- 1 11 from the normal operating position.

Add e.

The safety evaluation and plant shutdown will not be dependent on the LVDT signals alone.

Items 2.a.(2),

2.b., and 2.c. will be the controlling factors.

LVDTs have been installed to enhance the MS piping transient monitoring program.

We understand your plans are to replace the existing monitoring system with the Megadac computerized data acquisition system to minimize spurious trips and to improve signal data handling and presentation.

The interruption of the MS piping transient monitoring program due to modification, hook up, calibration and testing will not exceed a total cumulative time of 72 hours8.333333e-4 days <br />0.02 hours <br />1.190476e-4 weeks <br />2.7396e-5 months <br /> without notifying Region III. Prior to installation of this system and performance of associated activities, these planned actions will bi discussed with Region III.

Please inform us immediately if your understanding of these actions are different from that stated above.
