Gentlemen:

APR 2 6 1985

This refers to the routine safety inspection conducted by Mr. S. M. Hare of

this office on March 27 through April 17, 1985, of activities at Dresden

Nuclear Power Station Units 2 and 3 authorized by NRC Operating License Nos.

DPR-19 and DPR-25 and to the discussion of our findings with Mr. D. Scott,

Mr. J. Wujciga and others of your staff at the conclusion of the inspection.

Additional information concerning this inspection was discussed on April 17,

1985, during a telephone call between Mr. Hare and Mr. Wujciga of your staff.

The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies areas examined during

the inspection. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of a selective

examination of procedures and representative records, observations, and

interviews with personnel.

No items of noncompliance with NRC requirements were identified during the

course of this inspection.

As you are aware, due to past as found test failures in 1979, and 1983, Dresden

Unit 2 is on an accelerated Type A test schedule.

50, Appendix J,Section III.A.6(b) requirement, the next Unit 2 Type A test

shall be performed at the next refueling outage unless you request and are

granted an exemption from this requirement by NRR.

During this inspection our inspectors noted evidence of thorough preplanning and

conscientious execution of the Type A test by Dresden Station personnel. This

represents an improvement in your performance in this area and greatly

enhanced the successful conduct of the test.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission

1s regulations, a copy of

this letter and the enclosure(s) will be placed in the NRC Public Document
