Docket No. 50-237 LSOS-82-09-065 Mr. L. De 1 George Director of Nuclear Licensing Cormnonwealth Edison Company Post Offic~ Box 767 Chicago, Illinois 60690
Dear Mr. De 1 ~e<@ge_ :
September 21, 1982
SUBJECT:
SEP TOPiC III-7.B,.DESIGN CODES, DESIGN CRITERIA AND LOAD COMBINATIONS - DRESDEN NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNIT NO. 2 We have performed a preliminary review of)Our response dated ~'gust 2, 1982, and have the following cotranents:
- 1.
You stated that there is no -section as 11.16 fn ACI 349-76.
The 1978 supplement to ACI 349-76 includf§::;section 11.16.
The supplement inserts
.. a new paragraph and renumbers* the remaining so that Section ll.16 of the 1978 supple_m~nt is actually Section 11.15 in the ACI 34.9-76 code.
- 2.
It does not appear that all aspects of Appendix A of ACI 349-76 have been considered (e.g., temperature effects on concrete strength) nor do we know how thermal gradients were considered originally *
. 3. It appears t~at you have not reviewed Appendi@A of the enclosure to
$C~c./
the III-7.B SER.
In-that appendix, we noted circular tubular elements
( )
subject to axial compression as not-applicable to Dresden 2.
Upon a
'46
- site visit, these types of structural elements were noted on the upperl)S~
floor of the reactor building yet you did not point out this correction to our SER in your August 2, 1982 response.
- 4.
You have not addressed..Ehe ability of structures to withstand increased loadings (e.g., snow loads developed in SEP Topic II-2.A).
We are currently reviewing your response further.
For the purpose of con*
ducting the integrated assessment of.Dresde~. we are considering the SER sent to you on May 20, 1982, as final and il'kt.§.ild to incorporate your cotranents to the extent*possible during the integrated assessment.
(;) \\ J-.l\\ )ld---.
