JET PUMP RISER WELD FLAW EVALUATION FOR. DRESDEN NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNIT 2 (TAC NO. MA1672)

- By letter dated April 11, 1998, Commonwealth Edison Company (ComEd, the licensee).
submitted, for NRC review, the results of the in-vessel visual inspection (IVV!) of the Dresden, Unit 2, jet pumps. This IVVI was conducted by Com Ed during the units 151h refueling outage, D2R15, in accordance with the guidelines of the BWR Vessel Internals.Project Jet Pump Assembly Inspection and Flaw Evaluation Guidelines (BWRVIP-41). The inspection identified an indication in the heat affected zone of the thermal sleeve to riser elbow weld RS-1 of jet pump riser (JPR) 15/16. ComEd's submittal, associated flaw evaluation, and assessment of the impact on operation with the detected flaw was intended to demonstrate that Dresden, Unit 2, could be operated without repair for two fuel cycles. By two letters dated July 10, 1998, and a letter dated November 2, 1998, Com Ed provided additional information.
The staff has complet_ed its review of these submittals and concludes that continued operation of Dresden, Unit 2, without repair of the identified flaw at weld RS-1 of JPR 15/16 is acceptable for two fuel cycles, The staff al.so c;:oncludes that Com Ed's proposal to reexamine the flaw according to the guidelines and schedule of BWRVIP-41. is acceptable. The staffs safety evaluation is enclosed.
This completes our actions with 'respect to TAC No. MA 1672.
