REQUEST FOR ADDiTIONAL INFORMATION FOR CONTAINMENT PURGE SYSTEM AND CONTAINMENT VENTING SYSTEM FOR DRESDEN UNIT 3 DOCKET NO. 50-249 Enclosure e

1.

The docketed infonnation as to the design of Engineered Safety Features (ESF) such as the Containment Ventilatio1 Isolation (CV!) systems does not adequately address the following areas.

Please discuss how your design confonns with each:

l - The overriding* of one type of safety actuation signal (e.g., radiation) should not cause the blocki1g of any other type of safety actuation signal (e.g., Jressure) to the isolation valves.

2 - Sufficient physical features (e.g., key l.:ick 5.,.,*itches) should be provided to facilitate adequate adrinistrative controls.

3 - The system-level annunciation of the overridc'en status should be provided for every safety system irrpacted when an override is active.

4 - Diverse signals should be provided to initiate isolation of the containment ventilation system.

Specifically, containment high radiation, safety injection actuation, and containment high pressure should automatically intiate Containment Ventilation Isolation (CVI).

5 - The instrumentation and control systems prov~ded to initiate ESF should be designed and.qualified as safety-grade equipment.

• 6 - The overriding or resetting* of the isolatio[ actuation signal should not cause the autorr~tic motion of any ESF valve.

Provide the process and instrurrentation (P&ID) ar,d schematic drawings of your purge and vent system.

3.

Identify any differences between Units 2 and 3 tlat restrict the responses to questions 1 and 2 above to only Unit 3.
