INSPECTION REPORT NO. 50-388/94-09

This letter refers to the announced inspection, conducted by Messrs. Carrasco and Patnaik of

this office at the Susquehanna

Steam Electric Station, Unit 2, Berwick, Pennsylvania,

during

the periods of April4-8, 1994, and April 11-15, 1994.

The results of the inspection were

discussed with members of your staff at the conclusion of the inspections on April 8 and

April 15, 1994.

This inspection included review of the inservice inspection @ST, repair and replacement

programs for Class 1, 2, and 3 pressure retaining components,

and the mechanical stress

improvement process performed on the reactor coolant system to mitigate intergranular stress

corrosion cracking in austenitic stainless

steel piping. Maintaining pressure boundary

component integrity is important to the protection of public health and safety.

Within these areas,

the inspection consisted of selective examination of procedures

and

records, interviews with personnel,

and observation of your ISI activities made by the

inspectors.

Within the scope of this inspection, no violations were observed.

The ISI repair

and replacement programs for Class 1, 2, and 3 pressure-retaining

components are performed

in accordance with technical specifications.

The ISI activities were properly coordinated,

and

your staff exercised good control over the contractors'ondestructive

examination activities.
