This letter refers to the routine safety inspection of your Fire Protection
Program conducted
by Nr. A. Krasopoulos
of this office on April 3-7,
1989 at
the Susquehanna
Unit
1 and
2 Steam Electric Station,
Berwick, Pennsylvania.
Mr. Krasopoulos
discussed
the findings of the inspection with Mr.
R.
Byram at
the conclusion of the inspection.
The findings of the inspection
were further
discussed
in
a telephone
conversation
between
Mr.
T.. Martin of NRC Region I
and Mr. Byram of your staff on May 10,
1989.
Areas
examined during this inspection
are described
in the
NRC Region I
Inspection
Report which is enclosed with this letter.
Within these
areas,
the
inspection consisted
of a selective
review of procedures
and records,
interviews with personnel,
and observations
made
by the inspector.
During the course of this inspection,
questions
were raised
regarding
the
adequacy
of the initial acceptance
testing of a number of the
C02 fire
suppression
systems.
Pending, resolution of this matter, your staff committed
to establish
and maintain
one hour roving fire watches
in the subject areas.
An NRC meeting is scheduled for June
13,
1989 to discuss this matter further
with your staff.
