routine safety
inspection
conducted
by inspectors
of this
office on February
5,
1989 - March 11,
1989,
at the Susquehanna
Steam Electric
Station,
Salem
Township,
The
results
are
documented
in
the
enclosed
inspection
report.
The inspection
covered
plant operations,
surveil-
-lance
and
maintenance
activities for both units.
At the
conclusion
of
the
inspection,
Mr. J. Stair
summarized
the inspection
findings to Mr. G. Stanley
and other members of your staff.
The enclosed
report also describes
the review and evaluation of the electrical
fault associated
with the 'A'ain condensate
pump which led to a manual scram
of Unit
1
on
February
7.
Although
no adverse
safety
impact resulted,
we con-
sidered
the
event to
be operationally significant.
Our inspection
determined
that
operating
personnel
were
responsive
in that
they properly
assessed
the
unique circumstances
and took the appropriate
corrective actions.
Involvement
of your engineering staff to aid in troubleshooting
and development of a repair
program
was
notable.
We
also
noted
a
strong
involvement
by
management
to
ensure
that
a
comprehensive
evaluation
of the
event
was
performed
prior
to
returning the unit to service.
