Subject:

10CFR21 Report 6ent1emen:

Thermodynamic calculations of the effect of iodine released in a maximum credible accident on the catalyst used in the Comsip models K-II I and K-IY containment gas monitoring systems have been done by a number of groups.

Since these calculations make a number of assumptions, the results do not correlate wel1; i'.e., while evaluation by Comsip showed the'atalyst life as satisfactory, Sargent and Lundy calculations indicated a life of, 2 days, Therefore, Gomsip initiated testing with iodine concentrations exceeding what could be expected in a large HNR.

0.02 mi llimeters of mercury vapo~ pressure, At this concentration the standard'ata1yst bed remains useful for 10 days.

A new configu~ation has been tested and shows no degradati on after 5 months, Since the 1 ife of the catalys t is an inverse linear function of the iodine concentration, a large PAR (with 10 times the containment volume of an equivalent output 8MR) would have a catalyst life of 100 days using the standard.catalyst bed.

Gomsip is manufacturing the new catalyst bed configuration which will be in all-K-III and K-IV systems shipped after April 1; 1983'dditiona1 catalyst beds are being manufactured'"

as replacements for the cata1yst beds in systems and in spare::.:;.
