Docket Nos.:
50-387/388 Mr. Norman W. Curtis Vice President Engineering and Construction - Nuclear Pennsylvania Power 5 Light Company 2 North Ninth Street Allentown, Pennsylvania 18101
Dear Mr. Curtis:
SUBJECT:
QUALIFICATION TEST FOR FIFTH DIESEL GENERATOR By a letter dated September 7,
- 1984, Pennsylvania Power 8 Light Company (PPSL) provided to the NRC staff a report entitled "300 Start Test Generic gualification Study" to justify that the 300 start test performed on similar existing diesel generators is applicable to the fifth diesel generator being installed at Susquehanna Steam Electric Station.
The NRC staff has reviewed the justifications in the form of analysis and found it acceptable.
However, in addition to the in-situ tests required by Regulatory Guide 1. 108 to establish the onsite diesel generator reliability, the NRC staff will require periodic testing to assure continued reliability of the additional diesel generator.
The staff safety evaluation is enclosed.
We understand that in the near future you will make a submittal requesting staff approval" for the addition of this fifth diesel generator to your station.
That'ubmittal should incorporate appropriate
- design, construction and operating information as well as technical specifications governing its~
use.
If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact M. J.
Campagnone, Project Manager.
Sincerely,
Enclosure:
