Subject:

Preservice Inspection (PSI) Relief Requests for Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, Unit 1

In a letter dated March 3, 1983, Pennsylvania Power Im Light Company re-quested additional relief from certain requirements in the Preservice Inspection (PSI) for Susquehanna, Unit 'I and revised earlier PSI relief requests.

Preservice Inspection is intended to establish a reference or base line', for inservice inspections.

The NRC staff has determined in its evaluation of the March 3, 1983 letter that certain ASME Code Section XI examination requirements defined in 10 CFR Part 50, Section 50.55a(g)(2) are impractical.

Therefore, pursuant to 10 CFR Par t 50, Section 50.55a(g)(2),

the NRC staff has granted relief from the requirements that have been determined to be impractical and that, if implemented, would result in hardships or unusual difficulties without a compensating increase in the level of quality and safety.

The NRC staff technical evaluation of the relief requests are provided as Enclosures 1 and 2.

These enclosures will be incorporated into a future supplement to the Safety Evaluation Report (SER) related to the operation of Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, Units 1 and 2, IIUREG-0776.

Sincerely, NO OO N
