Docket No. 50-388 MAR 1G 1983 Pennsylvania Power 8 Light Company ATTN:
Hr. N.
W. Curtis, Vice President Engineering and Construction, Nuclear 2 North Ninth Street Allentown, Pennsylvania 18101 Gentlemen:
Subject:
NDE Van Inspection at Susquehanna Unit 2 As requested in your letter, PLA-1554 dated March 7, 1983, we are rescheduling the NDE van inspection at Susquehanna Unit 2.
The inspection, on site, will be con-ducted during the period July 5 - 15, 1983.
We will identify the specific items to be inspected during the third week in May.
We request that the documents re-quired for our review be made available to us by June 10, 1983.
We consider this as an independent verification inspection of construction at the Susquehanna Unit 2 site.
Construction activities and materials will be sampled through nondestructive examinations as a supplement to our existing ongoing inspec-tion efforts.
Similar nondestructive examinations by NRC are being performed on a
routine basis at other nuclear power reactor sites.
The scope of the program, security requirements and services for the NRC van, con-tractor personnel access requirements and licensee interfaces will be discussed with your representatives prior to arrival of the van on site.
Nondestructive examinations will be primarily radiography although other NDE techniques will be
. used.
To minimize the impact on normal site activities, backshift hours will be used whenever possible.
The schedule change has reduced our total time on site, therefore, it is essential that during the hours agreed
- upon, we have free access to the site and that the work of the inspection crew be uninterrupted.
Your co-operation in assuring these conditions will be appreciated.
Your representatives will be kept informed of our progress and significant findings and at the conclusion of the on-site activities, an exit meeting with licensee personnel will be conducted in accordance
>lith our normal practices.
The evaluation of examination results and preparation of an inspection report will be carried out following completion of the on-site work and the results will be transmitted to you via the normal NRC reporting mechanism.
