Independent Teardown Analysis/Inspection of Cable The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has initiated a program of independent verification tests and inspection to increase the confidence in our established inspection program.

As part of this program, nine samples of cable obtained from the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station (SSES) were subjected to a teardown analysis/inspection by an independent laboratory under contract to the NRC.

The results of the independent teardown analysis/inspection are documented in report F-C5260-3-1, a copy of which is enclosed.

The report identified four (4) areas of concern which must be resolved between members of your staff and the Region I staff:

1.

Configuration of the cable as compared against IPCEA-S-19-81.

2.

Insulation thickness of one sample.

3.

Pinhole in the 'jacket of one cable.

4.

Spectroscopic analysis of insulation.

These at eas of concern will be discussed with your staff during future inspections of SSES.

In accordance with Section 2.790 of the NRC's "Rules of Practice,"

Part 2, Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations.

a copy of this letter will be placed in the NRC's Public Document Room.
