NRC INTEGRATED INSPECTION REPORT NOS. 50-220/98-19
AND 50-410/98-19
Dear Mr. Mueller:
This report transmits the findings of safety inspections conducted by NRC inspectors at the
Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2, from November 22, 1998 through January 2, 1999.
At the conclusion of the inspection, the findings were discussed with members of your staff.
During the six-week inspection period covered by this report, operation of the Nine Mile Point
Nuclear Station was appropriately focused on safety.
On November 24, 1998, Unit 2 was
shutdown to troubleshoot and repair a reactor recirculation system flow control valve. During the
"
plant shutdown and subsequent startup, we noted generally good Unit 2 staff performance as
evidenced by clear three-way communications, appropriate use of procedures and sufficient
management oversight and control.
We also reviewed the emergency preparedness
program during this inspection period and,
overall, determined it to be well implemented.
In accordance with 10CFR2.790 of the NRC's "Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter and its
enclosures willbe placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
