REQUEST FOR ADDITIONALINFORMATIONRELATEDTO GENERIC LETTER 97-04, NINE MILEPOINT NUCLEARSTATION, UNIT NO. 1 (TAC NO. MA0013)
Dear Mr. Mueller.
The NRC staff issued Generic Letter (GL) 97-04, "Assurance of Sufficient Net Positive Suction Head for Emergency Core Cooling and Containment Heat Removal Pumps," on October 7, 1997.
The GL requested that licensees provide information necessary to confirm the adequacy of the net positive suction head (NPSH) available for emergency core cooling and containment heat removal pumps.
By letter dated January 5, 1998, Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation submitted its 90-day response to GL 97-04 for Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, Unit No. 1 (NMP1).
The NRC staff has reviewed your response and is concerned that NMP1 may not be within its licensing bases because the containment overpressure needed to assure adequate NPSH appears to be greater than the overpressure previously approved by the NRC staff. Please provide a response within 30 days discussing how your response to GL 97-04 related to containment overpressure compares with your current licensing bases.
Ifyou should determine that NMP1 is outside of its licensing bases, the staff expects that you willcomply with the Commission's reporting regulations and take prompt action to modify your licensing bases as appropriate, or otherwise restore NMP1 to a condition consistent with the licensing bases.
Should you have any questions, please contact me by phone on (301) 415-3049 or by electronic mail at dsh@nrc.gov.
