REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING NINE MILE POINT NUCLEAR STATION UNIT NO. 1, SECOND 10-YEAR INTERVAL INSERVICE INSPECTION PROGRAM PLAN (TAC NO. H83099)

By letter dated February 5,

1993, Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation (NMPC)

"responded to our request for additional information (RAI) dated December 3,

1992, regarding NHPC's Inservice Inspection Plan for the second 10-year interval for Nine Mile Point (NHP-1).

The second 10-year Inservice Inspection Plan for NHP-1 had been submitted by NMPC letter dated March 30, 1992.

In response D to the RAI, NHPC provided a rationale for the reclassification of the control rod drive hydraulic, high pressure coolant injection, reactor feedwater, condensate pump inlet, and shutdown cooling systems from Class 2

during the first 10-year interval to nonsafety-related during the second 10-year interval.

The NRC staff is reviewing NHPC's February 5,

1993, response;

however, we have determined that additional information is required for us to assess this proposed change in reclassification.

Therefore, within 30 days of receipt of this letter, please provide the following to permit us to complete our review within a timely manner:

1.

An estimate of the change in reliability of the subject systems.

2.

Other actions to assure reliability of the subject, systems.

3.

An estimate of the change in risk associated with the reclassification of the subject systems.
