Dear Hr. Sylvia:
SUBJECT:
NINE HILE POINT NUCLEAR STATION UNIT NO.

RESPONSE
TO NRC BULLETIN 93-02, "DEBRIS PLUGGING OF EHERGENCY CORE COOLING SUCTION STRAINERS" (TAC NO. H86586)
This letter acknowledges receipt of Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation's (NHPC's) response dated June 10, 1993, to NRC Bulletin 93-02 (Bulletin).
The Bulletin was issued Hay 11, 1993, to all nuclear power reactor licensees.
It requested licensees to identify fibrous material in the primary containment, take any necessary compensatory
- measures, and remove any such material.
NHPC's response stated that:
(1) no fibrous filter material, such as described in the Bulletin, was identified as being used or stored in the Nine Hile Point 1 containment during normal operation; (2) if fibrous materials were to be used, even on a temporary basis, its use would need to be reviewed in accordance with the temporary modification or other plant change procedure and that currently no temporary modifications exist on drywell cooling or ventilation systems; and (3) the drywell is thoroughly inspected for cleanliness prior to startup following each refueling outage and that these walkdowns would have identified any poor housekeeping or abnormal drywell configurations.
Based on NHPC's response, we consider NHPC's actions to be complete.
Please retain any records of NHPC's actions in response to this Bulletin, as subsequent inspection activities may be conducted in regards to this issue.
Should you have any questions, please contact me at (301) 504-1409 or the Lead Project Hanager for this issue, John B. Hickman at (301) 504-3017.
Sincerely, cc:
