Site: SALEM Emergency Class: Not Applicable At approximately 1408 [EST] on 2/23/2017, 2 deceased Atlantic Sturgeons were removed from the Salem Unit 1 Circulating Water System (CWS) Intake trash racks at the Salem Generating Station. Both Sturgeons were deceased upon retrieval. A report was made by Environmental Licensing to the National Marine Fisheries at 1458 and the NJDEP Division of Fish & Wildlife at 1500, concerning the Atlantic sturgeons.

"Nuclear Environmental Affairs has made a determination that this event warrants a 4 hr report to the NRC under RAL 11.8.2.a."

The death of the sturgeons was not causal to plant operations.

Licensee notified the NRC Resident Inspector and the Lower Alloways Creek Township. The licensee will also be notifying the State of New Jersey and State of Delaware.

Notified the R1DO (Powell) and the NRC Endangered Species group via email.
