This refers to the results of the routine resident
safety inspection
conducted
by Messrs.
W. Schmidt,
R. Laura,
and W. Mattingly and Ms. C. 'Beardslee
from April 29 through
May 23, 1992, at Nine Mile Point Units
1 and 2, Scriba, New York. Mr. Schmidt discussed
the
inspection
findings with members
of your staff at the'xit meeting
conducted
on
June 3, 1992.
This inspection was directed toward areas important to public health and safety.
The enclosed
NRC Region I Inspection Report describes
the areas examined during the inspection.
Within
these areas,
the inspection consisted of observation of activities in progress,
interviews with
personnel,
and selective examinations of procedures and representative
records.
The activities at both units were conducted safely over the period.
The investigation activities
which identified the cracking in the emergency cooling system valves at Unit 1, and the tin
smearing
on the Division I and II emergency, diesel generators
at Unit 2, were considered
excellent.
The actions taken by your staff on the testing of the secondary containment at Unit
1 were thorough, timely, and complete.
