By letter dated April 13,

1992, Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation (NHPC) responded to our October 16, 1991, letter in which we requested NHPC to address the potential for simultaneous withdrawal of two control rods at Nine Mile Point 1.

In its April 13,

1992, response, NHPC committed to modify the control rod drive selector switch during the upcoming 1992 refueling outage to allow for an additional set of normally open contacts to be wired in ~~ies with existing normally open contacts in the Reactor Manual Control Systm'm Circuity.

This modification will preclude the potential for simultaneous withdrawal of two control rods.

The NRC staff has reviewed NMPC's April 13,

1992, commitment; we have determined that the April 13,

1992, commitment is acceptable.

Please notify the NRC in writing when this modification has been implemented.

This requirement affects one respondent and, therefore, is not subject to Office of Management and Budget review under P.L.96-511.
