1 - RE(VEST FOR INFORMATION REGARDING PERFORMANCE OF STEEL CONTAINMENT (TAC NO. 80214)

Meetings were held on April 24, 1991, and July 15, 1991, with Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation and NRC staff representatives to discuss torus wall thinning and the overall performance capabilities of the Nine Mile Point Unit No.

1 containment to withstand severe accidents.

This information is to be used by the staff for a study on containment performance.

The purpose of this study is to assess the performance of steel containments with inservice degradation in order to identify design basis and severe accident concerns.

The NRC staff needs additional information regarding the Nine Mile Point Unit No.

1 drywell in order to complete this study.

The specific information requested is noted in the enclosed request for additional information.

Please provide this information within 30 days from receipt of this letter.

The requirements of this letter affect fewer than 10 respondents

and, therefore, are not subject to Office of Management and Budget review under P.L.'6-511.
