The purpose of this letter is to clarify Ni'agara Mohawk' position with respect to the definition of a Heavy Load.
Our letter of August 1,
- 1982, transmitted a report on Heavy Loads which indicated that Niagara Mohawk defined a heavy load as an'ything weighing more than a fuel assembly, or approximately 700 pounds.
NUREG-0612, "Control of Heavy Loads at Nuclear Power Plants,"
indicates that a Heavy Load shall be defined as the weight of the plant's spent fuel assembly plus its lifting device.
Although the weight of a fuel assembly plus its handling tool is greater than 1000 pounds, Niagara Mohawk conservatively has redefined a heavy load as 1000 pounds or greater; this is also consistent with Nine Mile Point Unit 2 Technical Specification 3.9.7.
