<o By your letter of May 20, 1982, you requested information regar ding the operability of'he radwaste incinerator proposed by the Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation for use at the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, Unit No. l.

- In addition, you asked if any other radwaste reduction systems were in oper ation.

Niagara Mohawk has not installed an incinerator at Nine Mile Point.

In the fall of 1978 Niagara'ohawk proposed such a radwaste incinerator and requested NRC review and approval for use at the Nine Mile Plant.

For approximately one year thereafter Niagara Mohawk's proposal was under NRC review.

However, during the summer of 1979 Niagara Mohawk requested that the NRC hold its review in abeyance.

Among other things, the licensee cited technical difficulties as a major cause for delay.

At this time the NRC has ceased the review of the proposed incinerator.

Please note that in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations, NRC review and approval will be necessary prior to operation of a radwaste incinerator at any nuclear plant.

Ilith respect to other such incinerators, none has ever been approved by the NRC for operation in the United States.
