Sprinkler Systems

<<Reactor Building Sprinkler Systems - Control Room Sprinkler Systems - Turbine Building Sprinkler Systems - Haste Building Sprinkler Systems - Off Gas Building Sprinkler Systems - Administration Building Based on our review, we conclude that the licensee's proposed fire pro-tection modifications regarding the above items are acceptable.

Item 3.1.2(6) was mistakenly listed as an area requiring a sprinkler system.

Our concern.was only with the Off Gas Building fire, detection, system and this was reviewed and accepted by us in a previous ev'aluation.

To date',

we have not received inforijat~on to'complete our reviews on:

3.1.2(2) and 5.1>1.6 Sprinkler System. - Cable Spreading Room 3.1.2(3

ENCLOSURE 1

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING BRANCH/FIRE PROTECTION SECTION ADDITIONAL FIRE PROTECTION INFORMATION REVIEll NINE MILE POINT DOCKET NO. 50-220 SPRINKLER SYSTEMS - REACTOR BUILDING SECTION 3.1.2 1

In the SER, it was our concern that safety related cable trays and floor areas where combustible materials are stored in areas of the Reactor. Building at elevations

237, 251 and 318 were not provided with an adequate level of fire protection.

By letter dated June 10, 1980, the licensee proposed to install pre-action sprinkler systems to protect the three areas of concern.

These pre-action sprinkler systems will be designed and installed in accordance with NFPA Standards No.

13 and 15.

Based on our review, we conclude that the pr oposed sprinkler systems will provide an adequate level of fire suppression for the concentrations of cables.and combustible materials located in the areas of the Reactor Building at elevations

237, 251 and '318 and, therefore, are. acceptable with regards to fire protection.

SPRINKLER SYSTEM - CONTROL ROOM SECTIONS 3.1.2 2

AND 5.2.3 In the SER, it was our concer n that concentrations of safety related cable and floor areas where combustible materials are stored in the Control Room may not be provided with an adequate level of fire protection.

Based on our review, we conclude that, since the licensee is providing 'an emergency shutdown panel with sufficient monitoring information to accomplish safe shutdown of the reactors, a smoke detection

system, and manual fire suppression, the fire protection is adequate and meets the fire protection guidelines in BTP 9.5-1, and is, therefore, acceptable.

SPRINKLER SYSTEMS -TURBINE BUILDING SECTION 3.1.2 4

In the SER, it was our concern that safety related cable trays and floor areas where combustible materials are stored in areas of the Turbine Building at elevations 250, 261, 277 and 300 were not provided with an adequate level of fire protection.

By letter dated June 10, 1980, the licensee proposed to install sprinkler systems to protect the areas of concern.

The sprinkler systems will be designed and installed in accordance with NFPA Nos.

13 and 15.

Based on our review, we conclude that the proposed sprinkler systems wi 11 provide an adeuate level of fire protection for the concentrations of. cables and combustible materials in the areas'f the Turbine Building at elevations

250, 261, 277 and 300 and, therefore, are acceptable with regards to fire protection.

I'g SPRINKLER SYSTEM - HASTE BUILDING SECTION 3~1.2 5

In the SER,.it was our concern that the truck bay area in the Haste Building was not provided with an adequate level of fire protection.

By letter dated June 10, 1980, the licensee proposed to install a dry pipe sprinkler system to protect ttie truck bay in the Haste Building.

The dry pipe system will conform to NFPA Standard No.

13.

Based on.our review, we conclude that the proposed dry pipe sprinkler system will provide an adequate level of fire suppression for the truck bay in the Haste Building and, therefore, is acceptable.

SPRINKLER SYSTEM-ADMINISTRATION BUILDING SECTION 3.1.2 7

In the SER, our stated concern is that the existing and proposed portions of the Administratiion Bui lding may not be provided with an adequate level of fire protection, and that a fire in this building may propagate to adjacent bui ldings where equipment needed for safe shutdown may be located.

Based on our review, we now conclude that an unmitigated fire in the Admini-stration Bui lding will not affect any safe shutdown equipment, and therefore additional fire protection to protect the health and safety of the public is not required for the Administration Building.
