Dear Mr. Giambusso,

Re:

Nine Mile Point Unit 1

Docket No." 50-'220 8

~Kg~P o+(<e>

4p C~4 gg Your letter of November 20, 1972, requested analyses and additional information relative to the possible fuel densification

, at Nine Mile Point Unit 1.

The requested information has been submitted to the Commission in a comprehensive generic report, NEDM-10735, "Densification Considerations, in BWR Fuel Design

'and

-Performance,"

dated

December, 1972.

We have reviewed this report and find that the fuel design and operating parameters for both the initial core and reload fuel at Unit 1 are within the range of parameters analyzed.

Further, visual inspection of fuel discharged from Unit 1

has shown no tendency for the fuel rods to experience the collapse mechanism noted in, the Commission,'s report on fuel densification.

From the analyses and data presented in this report, we conclude that no changes in design or operating conditions are necessary to maintain required margins for Unit 1.

Sincerely, TJB/vk Thomas Brosnan Vice President and Chief Engineer
