MOHAWK 300 ERIE BOULEVARD WEST SYRACUSE, N. Y. 13202 June 6, 1973 Mr. Dennis L. Ziemann Chief, Operating Reactors Branch 2

Directorate of Licensing United States Atomic Energy Commission Washington, D.

Dear Mr. Ziemann:

P Pjp, CO Re:

Nine Mile Point Unit 1 Docket No. '50-220 During our meeting with the Commission Staff and General Electric on May 2, 1973, plans were described by General Electric and Niagara Mohawk to implement requirements outlined in Mr. Donald P. Knuth's March 2, 1973 letter to Mr. J.

A. Hinds, regarding eight-by-eight reload fuel.

At this meeting, Niagara Mohawk stated its intention to make a complete submittal in a timely manner:

a design report on the eight-by-eight reload fuel for Nine Mile Point 'Unit 1, on or before September 15, 1973; and the transient and accident analysis report on or before October 15, 1973.

Both of these submittals will cover the reload fuel design developed by General Electric for the Spring 1974 refueling.

Xt is our understanding that General Electric is working directly with the Commission on a generic basis for the other information outlined in Mr. Knuth's March 2, 1973 letter and in Mr. Hinds May 21; 1973 letter to Mr. Victor Stello, Jr.

lee trust that this expedited schedule will permit achievement of a timely and satisfactory review of this improved fuel concept in time for the refueling of Unit 1 which is now planned for March 1974.

Very truly yours,

/g Cl DOOKEKO USAEO JUNS
