Dear Mr. Lear:

Our October 1, 1975 letter referenced a five volume report'ntitled "Hark I Containment Evaluation Short Term Program (NEDC-20989)"

which was submitted by General Electric on October 6, 1975.

As indi-cated in Volume I of the report, work was continuing in the following three areas:

1.

Pool swell impact on expansion bellows 2.

Pool swell impact on relief valve discharge lines 3.

Uplift force on torus support columns This letter is to advise you that General Electric has submitted under separate cover Addendum No.

1 to.the above-mentioned document.

This Addendum covers items 1

and 2 above.

Item 3, concerning support columns, is an area where additional work is still underway.

General Electric is in the process of performing additional tests on a 1/12th scale model segment to obtain data for identifying net downward and upward torus loads.

This will also provide confirmation of pool swell velocity with the effect of pressure over the pool surface considered.

The retests are necessary since the results of the or iginal tests were inconclusive due to insufficient and questionable data.

The results of the evaluation will be provided in Addendum No.

2 to NEDC-20989.

The information included in the General Electric report demon-strates that continued operation of Nine Mile Point Unit 1 during implementation of the long term program does not present an undue safety hazard to the public.
