1 Docket 50-220 Regulatory File Cy.
The Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards'etter of February 6, 1971, addressed the postulated event of dropping a
fuel cask into the pool at the Nine Mile Point Unit No.
1 and noted that the Regulatory Staff should follow this matter.
Our subsequent letter of March 12, 1971, acknowledged our intention to report study results and implement corrective measures on a
timely basis.
The attachment to this letter summarizes recently completed studies and proposes the addition of a cask drop protection system which will provide additional assurance of spent fuel pool integrity in the unlikely event of cask drop.
We anticipate making a procure-ment commitment for this system by the end of this year in order that installation can be completed before first use of a cask at this facility.
The cask drop protection system described in the attachment has been reviewed and approved by the Site Operations Review Committee and the Safety Review and Audit Board.
