Jun 04 1977 Docket No. 50-410 Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation AT%:

Nr. Gerald K. Rhode Vice President Engineering 300 Erie Boulevard test

Syracuse, New York 13202 I

Gentlemen>

SUBJECT:

NINE HlLE POINT NUCLEAR STATHB UNIT 2 RECIEiCULATIQ4 PRP DCCOUPLERS In your letter to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. staff dated June 8,

'977 you advised us that a decoupler would not be incorporated in the Nine Nile Point Nuclear Station Unit 2 recirculation puny design.

You also indicated that the basis for this decision is a General Electric Company letter to,the staff dated January 18, 1977.

In that letter the General Electric Co~any provided analyses for the purpose of d~nstrating that a decoupler is not required for their recirculation pump design.

tfe are continuing to review this matter of protecting the recirculation pump motor from overspeed conditions vhich have the potential for generation of missiles.

Additional information <~hich we requested from the General Electric Company was provided in the January 18, 1977 letter cited above.

This additional information and the results of experiments being performed by the Electric Power Research Institute should provide the necessary information-in order for us to conclude whether'the decouplers are required.

e Should ve conclude as a result of that review that decouplers are required, ve will require that you sqbmit a decoupler design for our review and approval.

Ne will advise you as soon as possible after ve have reached a conclusion on this matter.

Until that time we suggest that you continue to follow the staff's ongoing generic reviev of this matter with the General Electric Company.

einceceigi.
