20555 Re:
Nine Mile Point Unit 1 Docket No. 50-220 DPR-63 Gentlemen:
Our letter of September 3,
1976 proposed an in-service surveillance program for the torus catwalk and various torus support structure components for Nine Mile Point Unit l.
This program is applicable fox the duration of the Mark I Containment Long Term Program.
Two changes are being made in this surveillance program.
First, the requirement to verify proper hold-down of the catwalk.
This has been deleted since the catwalk has been xemoved.
- Second, the Magnetic Particle Testing requirement on the support column to shell attachment welds is being reduced from 100 percent to 10 percent.
This reduction is justified based on the excellent correlation between the design and as-built conditions of the torus, as shown by inspections made by the Office of Inspection and Enforcement during October, 1976.
- However, should there be any indications of defective welds, surveillance will be increased.
Very txuly yours, NIAGARA MOHAWK POWER CORPORATION II C il Gexald K.
