Re:

Nine Mile Point Unit 1 Docket No. 50-220 DPR-63

'ear Mr. Lear:

Duiing the course of the Mark I Containment Short Term

Program, the torus, support structure and internals at Nine Mile Point Unit 1 were reanalyzed.

As a result, it has been found that the solid catwalk's structural capability could conceivably be exceeded due to the pool swell load for the postulated worst-case loss-of-coolant accident.

However, for the most probable impact orientations and areas, containment integri ty would be maintained.

Consequently, the solid catwalk will be removed and replaced with a grating catwalk to alleviate this situation during the scheduled

Spring, 1977 refueling outage.

We believe the substantial financial impact resulting from an earlier shutdown to make these modifications not to be warranted in light of the extremely remote possibility for occurrence of the postulated worst-case loss-of'-

coolant event during this interim period.

Very truly yours, NIAGARA MOHAWK POWER CORPORATION ERALD K.
