NRC INSPECTION REPORT 50-275/97-12; 50-323/97-12
Dear Mr. Rueger:
An NRC inspection was conducted July 20 through August 30, 1997, at your Diablo
Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, Units
1 and 2, reactor facilities. The enclosed report
presents the scope and results of that inspection.
During the 6-week period covered by this inspection, your conduct of activities at Diablo
Canyon was generally characterized
by competent,
professional,
and safety-conscious
performance of operations,
maintenance,
engineering,
and plant support.
During the
inspection period, the operators'imely response
to the loss of cooling oil flow in a main
transformer prevented
a shutdown of the unit.
In addition, replacement of the Unit 1 main
steam safety valve discs with Inconel X-750 discs and the current augmented test program
for the main steam safety valves has indicated promising improvement
of the performance
and reliability of these valves.
In accordance
with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's "Rules of Practice,"
a copy of this letter
and its enclosure will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
